Despite being goal-oriented, persevering, and incredibly hardworking, life is more complicated than it should be. When our clients first come in, they feel overwhelmed by intrusive thoughts. They are deeply troubled by these obsessions and wish they would stop.
They have tried everything to make that happen, and yet nothing works.
In fact, throughout all their best efforts, their anxiety has only increased. They worry that their intrusive thoughts mean something, and despite their best efforts to eliminate doubt and fear, it inevitably returns.
They are incredibly frustrated and confused about how (and why) this is happening.
They feel anxious due to some thought that feels like a sucker punch to the gut.
The result is fear, anxiety, disgust, guilt, and/or embarrassment. They feel they must do something to make it stop and ensure it means nothing. They fear these thoughts are significant and personally relevant.
They notice their behaviors do not match up with their values. Their avoidance, reassurance-seeking, overthinking, and repetitive behaviors keep them from living in a place of self. They may be physically present in their life, but they are not mentally and emotionally as present as they want to be.
As a result, they feel they are missing out on much of their life. The guilt and shame of this can be overwhelming. Before they came to see us, they feared no one would understand the ego-dystonic nature of these intrusive thoughts.
They may have even worried that a therapist would confirm their fears and doubts about themselves were valid. And they were sure they would be all consumed by their anxiety for the rest of their lives. As a result, fear had a firm hold on their decisions.
